What is Vitals Pycnogenol®?

Pycnogenol® is a patented and standardized extract from the bark (the outer part of the bark) of the maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), a pine species that grows on the southwest coast of France. Pines are also traditionally referred to as pine trees. The extract is rich in several types of polyphenols, including oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) and organic acids (including ferulic acid, cinnamic acid and caffeic acid). There is already a long tradition in the use of Pycnogenol®. It has been used as a dietary supplement for about forty years. It is now one of the best researched nutrients in the world with more than 300 scientific publications.

The biological effects of the extract are broad and rely on a multiple mechanism of action. Pycnogenol® has a strong antioxidant effect and can help protect various body cells against free radicals. In addition, it contributes to the maintenance of good blood circulation and flexible blood vessels, because of a favorable influence on the production of NO (nitric oxide) from the amino acid L-arginine in the vessel walls. NO is involved in many regulatory mechanisms in, among other things, the vascular wall. Pycnogenol® helps to keep the connective tissue in the walls of veins and capillaries strong and can therefore be useful for unsightly veins. It also supports microcirculation, including in the brain.
