What is Turmeric/Curcumin?
Turmeric is a delicious, natural spice that has been used by ancient Indian cultures for centuries due to the spice’s flavor-enhancing properties and nutrient compounds.
Curcumin is the main active ingredient present in turmeric and is responsible for many of the touted benefits of the spice. However, some of the turmeric products on the market may not be the optimal methods for preserving this ingredient.
Our turmeric extracts are standardized to contain 95% curcumin, which extracted by using water as a solvent instead of the widely-used methanol.
What is the difference between Turmeric and Curcumin?
Great question! While they are not the same thing, curcumin is the bioactive compound that is contained within the herb turmeric. Sometimes, these can be used interchangeably, but always remember, turmeric is the delivery truck and curcumin is the package!
Why is Black Pepper added?
Curcumin is unfortunately absorbed poorly in the human body, and this was once believed to reduce the therapeutic potential. However, a recent study showed that the addition of piperine, a component in black pepper, can increase the bioavailability of curcumin by up to 2000%! We have added 5 grams of piperine to our turmeric powder range, to ensure optimal levels of absorption.

With that said, there can be certain things to watch out for when purchasing turmeric/curcumin supplements. One of these is the addition of black pepper extracts to enhance the bioavailability, as explained above. Some other brands will also take additional approaches to enhance the absorption and bioavailability. For example, Vitals (product below) have manufactured a cutting-edge product that packages the curcumin particles into fat droplets, which can then transport the bioactive compound into the blood.
Key Health Aspects of Curcumin (turmeric)
Curcumin is the yellow pigment found primarily in turmeric, which has been used as a remedy in Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine for several millennia. A polyphenol with anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and some potential therapeutic properties in cancer prevention.
Curcumin may support the management of oxidative and inflammatory conditions, metabolic syndrome, arthritis, anxiety, and hyperlipidemia. It may also help in the management of exercise-induced inflammation and muscle soreness, thus enhancing recovery and subsequent performance in active people. In addition, a relatively low dose may provide health benefits for people that do not have diagnosed health conditions.
Recent Research Findings
Research conducted with curcumin suggested that a small to moderate reduction in the symptoms of depression and anxiety may occur (Source: NCBI).
Studies investigating curcumin for pain and function in osteoarthritis suggests a notable benefit (Source: NCBI).
One review study reported that curcumin may improve LDL-cholesterol, and HDL-cholesterol (source: NCBI).
Curcumin may extend additional benefits to overweight or obese individuals, primarily due to its anti-inflammatory properties. Inflammation is one of the hallmarks of excess adipose tissue (fat) and plays a role in insuline resistance, immune function, and the generally disordered metabolism that is present in obesity.
