Colostrum is a creamy, rich, bovine breast milk made by the mother cow for only 3-4 days after birth. It contains a rich nutritional profile of protein, vitamins, minerals, growth factors, and essential fatty acids.
Colostrum is a rich and powerful bovine (cow) breast milk that is only produced by the mother for the first 3-4 days after the calves are born. It is the first food the new-borns receive and so contains an extensive range of nutrients including essential fatty and amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals. In addition, it is also rich in important growth factors and immune system components that are essential for antibacterial and anti-viral capabilities.
This is one reason why colostrum is one of our most popular supplements. Unlike regular milk or milk-based protein, colostrum is referred to as a highly-concentrated fluid, with a variety of bioactive compounds, that shouldn’t be categorized with other milk types.
PLENT Colostrum powder is of the highest quality, sourced from growth hormone-free cows and only drained after the fasting calves have received their requirements. This has been officially verified. We then spray dry the high-quality colostrum at a low temperature to best preserve the nutritional profile.
The name "Immune Milk" is sometimes used for colostrum because of the essential immune antibodies it contains, especially IgG, IgA and IgM. In fact, it contains much more of these antibodies than breast milk. In one study of top athletes, 12 weeks of colostrum supplementation resulted in a 79% increase in IgA antibodies to saliva.
These antibodies are essential for protection against infection, disease and illness when they bind to pathogenic bacteria, viruses and allergens. Another recent study, healthy adults who supplemented Colostrum for 90 days experienced significantly less colds and cold-related symptoms compared to the placebo group.
Colostrum is a rich source of growth factors and a multipurpose protein known as lactoferrin. These compounds have been shown to have therapeutic effects on gut and intestinal permeability, a condition known as 'leaky gut'.
In a small study, athletes with intestinal permeability prevented 80% of the symptoms by regularly supplementing colostrum. In another similar study, supplementing with colostrum powder for 20 days, led to a reduction in symptoms of intestinal permeability and a return to normal function.
For the general consumer, it can be difficult to differentiate between high and low-quality colostrum. This is because of the wide variation in processing methods that are typically used. Allow us to provide you with an insight to our process -
We chose raw (cold processed) whole milk colostrum from sustainably raised livestock. All calves receive their required colostrum milk before we extract it. We allow freeze-dry the milk to create a fine but highly-concentrated powder, and do not add any fillers or preservatives.
