Cinnamon, one of the world’s favorite spices, is a medicinal herb with over 4,000 years of traditional use. Research has shown that compounds in cinnamon bark called procyanidin Type-A polymers help maintain the body’s ability to metabolize glucose in a healthy way.*
Doctor’s Best Cinnamon Extract Cinnulin PF**, is a three-patented, water-soluble extract of cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmannii species) containing Type-A polymers. Cinnulin PF** is a patented product of Integrity Nutraceuticals International.
About this item
DOCTOR’S BEST CINNAMON EXTRACT FEATURES CINNULIN PF - a patented, water-soluble extract of cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmannii species) containing Type-A polymers. Cinnulin PF is a patented product of IN ingredients, Inc.
CINNAMON (Cinnamon) - one of the world's favorite spices, is a medicinal herb with over 4,000 years of traditional use. Research has shown that compounds in cinnamon bark called procyanidin Type-A polymers support the body's ability to metabolize glucose in a healthy way.
CINNAMON EXTRACT - contains Type-A polymers, improves the ability to maintain healthy blood levels of triglycerides and cholesterol that are already within the normal range. Use as part of your diet to help maintain healthy blood sugar levels
POWERFUL ANTIOXIDANTS - antioxidants protect your body from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Cinnamon is packed with powerful antioxidants, such as polyphenols.
What are the benefits of Cinnamon Extract Cinnulin PF?
Helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels*
Supports healthy glucose levels, body composition and blood pressure in healthy individuals.*
Why take Cinnamon Extract Cinnulin PF?
Bioactive compounds in cinnamon appear to have their impact at the cellular receptor level.*
Blood sugar control and storage involve phosphorylation-dephosphorylation reactions.*
Supports glucose transport mechanisms by enhancing insulin signaling pathways.*
How does it work?
Researchers at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center have shown that bioactive compounds in cinnamon facilitate glucose metabolism and storage in fat cells.*
These compounds stimulate glucose uptake into cells and increase glycogen (stored glucose) production via activation of the enzyme glycogen synthase.*
Cinnamon compounds have been shown to inhibit PTP-1, a PTPase that inactivates insulin receptors, and to stimulate autophosphorylation of these receptors in vitro, thereby supporting healthy blood sugar metabolism.*
Use as part of your diet to maintain healthy blood sugar levels* - Research has shown that a number of herbs and spices have blood sugar metabolizing activity.2 In a study published in 2000 by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), cinnamon demonstrated the greatest ability to stimulate healthy cellular glucose metabolism of 49 plant compounds tested.3
In a 2001 study, researchers at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center showed that bioactive compounds in cinnamon facilitates glucose metabolism and storage in fat cells.4 These compounds stimulated glucose uptake into cells and increased the production of glycogen (stored glucose) via activation of the enzyme glycogen synthase.
The bioactive compounds in cinnamon appear to have their effect at the level of certain cellular receptors. A physiological mechanism involved in the control and storage of blood sugar is characterized by dephosphorylation of specific cellular receptors.5 Enzymes called "protein tyrosine kinases" (PTPases) are thought to reduce the phosphorylation of receptors.6 Cinnamon compounds have been shown in vitro to have the ability to inhibit PTP-1 and increase the autophosphorylation of the same receptors7, thus supporting healthy blood sugar metabolism.
In an animal study, cinnamon (cassia) extract was administered to rats for three weeks. After this, the rats were infused with insulin and glucose to assess their insulin response. Increased phosphorylation of cellular receptors responsible for sugar metabolism was observed in the skeletal muscle of these rats, suggesting that cinnamon may enhance glucose uptake.8
Until recently, the precise molecular structure of the bioactive compounds in cinnamon was not clearly defined. The USDA has now determined that the bioactive compounds in cinnamon are water-soluble procyanidin Type A polymers of catechin and epicatechin. In a 2004 study, Type A polymers were isolated from cinnamon and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy. Type A polymers were found to increase in vitro insulin activity by 20-fold. Type A polymers also demonstrated antioxidant activity, as measured by inhibition of free radical production in platelets. These results suggest that in addition to regulating glucose metabolism, cinnamon may help protect cell membranes by inhibiting oxidation.9
HUMAN CLINICAL TRIALS - Cinnamon is known to have blood sugar-supporting effects when consumed as part of the diet. Cinnulin PF** is a natural extract of cinnamon that contains high levels of Type A polymers. Due to its standardization, Cinnulin PF** is more potent than regular culinary cinnamon and is safer. However, studies conducted with pure cinnamon provide important insight into the overall beneficial effects of this spice.
For example, a randomized, placebo-controlled human trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of cinnamon on glucose and blood lipid levels. A total of 60 subjects were divided into six groups to receive 1, 3, or 6 grams of whole cinnamon powder in 500 mg capsules or an equal number of placebo capsules daily. The cinnamon or placebo capsules were taken for two periods of 20 days each. Serum biomarkers were measured at 20 days, 40 days, and again at the end of a 20-day washout period during which neither cinnamon nor placebo was taken.
When combined with dietary practices, cinnamon at three different doses showed significant support in maintaining healthy blood sugar levels. The placebo groups showed no significant changes. Cinnamon was also shown to improve the ability to maintain healthy blood levels of triglycerides and cholesterol that are already within the normal range. The overall results of this trial show that cinnamon helps maintain healthy blood glucose and lipid levels with a daily intake of just 1 gram of whole cinnamon powder, and that this low dose may be just as beneficial as the higher doses of 3 and 6 grams.10 Because
Cinnulin PF** is an extract of cinnamon, lower doses of this unique extract have been shown to have similar effects.
For example, a twelve-week study published in 2006 found that Cinnulin PF** improved blood sugar levels and moderately supported blood pressure levels that were already within the normal range. The study involved twenty-two volunteers who were supplemented with Cinnulin PF** or placebo daily for twelve weeks. The Cinnulin PF** group received a daily dose of 500 mg. In addition to helping maintain healthy blood sugar and blood pressure levels, the group consuming Cinnulin PF** also showed a decrease in total body fat.13 Cinnulin PF** thus appears to be a useful and safe product to reap the benefits of cinnamon supplementation.
Safety - The various types of cinnamon are classified as GRAS (generally considered as safe).11 The Botanical Safety Handbook lists Cinnamomum cassia as a "Class 2b" herb; should not be used during pregnancy.12 The water-soluble cinnamon
